    Children on Planes

     BRAVO, Mr. Dick.

As one who traveled extensively in "the good old days", and rode on a B-747 when it was first flying, I can assure you children on planes were just as prone to screaming but 1. parents used to take responsibility for their little darlings and 2 there were fewer of them on the aircraft.

On my very infrequent flights these days, and even though I opt for the front cabin when I can, one still encounters screeching, screaming brats who also have a propensity for kicking the seat in front of them - usually mine!.

While I suspect you will receive some "hate mail" as a result of your October editorial but please sign me up for the kids on the wing or in the hold club.

    Re: Children on Planes

You hit it right on the mark.  I have been flying for approximately 40 years and see the progressive deteriation of simple creature comforts on commercial travel.  I too raised 3 wonderful children (no I am not biased.  Well, maybe a little...) and am often shocked to witness how modern parents simply do not teach respect and proper public behaviour to their children.  There were many times when stangers went out of their way to complement my wife and me on the outstanding behavours of our children while in resturants or other public venues.  That said, I doubt that any amount of public compaining will change things nor will we ever see the day when there is an adults only seating section on an airline.  My preference, when I can justify the almost $6 per gallon avgas price, is to use private aircraft where there is always an adult only seating section.  While there are no trips to the galley or restroom, it sure beats the security lines, waiting periods, and no legroom seating.  Unfortunately, it is a heck of a long trip to Europe.  Oh well, thank goodness for the Bose noise cancelling headsets.  See ya next week United.

I totally agree with you, Brad!  Being cooped up in a small space with someone else's misbehaving brats is pure hell, especially on a long flight. I have two theories as to the parents' complacence:  either 1) they don't care enough about others to control their children or 2) they have blown out their hearing with overly loud earbuds and can't hear the kids.   I think it's the former.  Yes, I realize the kids are bored.  Yes, I realize they don't want to be on the plane any more than I do. But, it is a parent's responsibility to teach their kids how to quietly occupy themselves when stuck in a situation they don't like.  I taught my son those skills and you obviously did the same with your kids.  Sometimes the noise can't be avoided - I remember flying with my son when he was only 6 months old and he cried the whole time (to my chagrin) but there's a difference between a crying infant and a shrieking 3 year old. Parents: control your kids!

we must teach our children on how to behave in public, constant training will mold them to a well rounded person
