Hi, well the most important aspect for SDI cable is that it is really 75 ohms which most cable used for analog was not, the next is to make sure that the BNC connectors are also true 75 ohms. After that the installation is very important, don't cinch down on the cable ties as hard as you can, doing so will distort the cross section of the cable and change it's impedance, also if you place the tie wraps at evenly spaced intervals this can cause the cable to become a filter, always place your tie wraps un-evenly. You can learn even more by checking out the January issue of Broadcast Engineering's newsletter, "Transition to Digital", it's a two part piece on SDI cabling. You can find it on the Broadcast Engineering home page. Hope this helps, Russ

A 75 Ohm RG-6 Cable is typically used for SDI SD and HD. Belden 1694 or the Plenimum version 1695 is widely used.

For plenum runs between our machine room and control room, I have been using Belden 1695.  I was ecstatic to see at NAB that Belden now has a plenum 1695 snake.  When I needed one last fall, we had to purchase individual 1695 lengths and tie them together (at asymmetrical intervals, and not too tightly, of course).  I believe the connector I used for termination was Kings 2065-10-9 (75 ohms, or course).

When I built out an SD edit suite based on FCP 4.5 years ago, we used the plenum version of Belden 8281.  If your run is short, that might work for HD-SDI as well.  My recollection is that the 1694/5 is rated and tested for much farther distances with HD-SDI when compared to 8281..
